The UK's Energy Sources
Get an map of the UK from Google images
Paste it into a document or print and stick it into your exercise book
Research the UK's "energy mix" ie How does the UK generate its electricity and use fossil fuels
Annotate your map to show some of the locations of specific sources of energy
E.g.
Nuclear power stations
Large wind farms (onshore and offshore)
Tidal Power
Wave power
Solar power
Coal fired power stations
Gas fired power stations
Oil fired power stations
HEP
Biofuels
Geothermal Power
Get photographs where possible.
In some case you could explain how it works (e.g. Wave power)
Add place names to build up a picture of the UK and its Energy
Add a suitable title
Try and keep it to one page of A4 (you can go onto 2 pages if necessary)
Print & stick it in your book (if done on computer)
Some help for you!!

"Lushan, where the quake struck, lies where the fertile Sichuan plain meets foothills that eventually give rise to the Tibetan plateau, and sits atop the Longmenshan fault." - SAME PLACE!!!
"rescuers are now understood to be struggling to reach the worst-affected areas because of aftershocks and landslides."
"Hard-hit parts of the county remained unreachable by road and several highways were cut off."
"In villages closest to the epicentre, almost all low-rise houses and buildings had collapsed. "

8EA & 8JS Energy research
Fossil Fuels
What are the main fossil fuels?
What is the UK’s ‘Energy Mix”?
Google the term “UK energy mix”.
Find a suitable pie chart that answers the question.
Research each fossil fuel with a focus on the following 3 themes:
Sustainability:
When is each source projected to run out?
Does each source harm the environment? How?
Which of the 3 main fossil fuels is the worst for the environment? Why?
Security:
Does the UK rely on imports of fossil fuels?
From where does the UK import most of its fossil fuels? Map?
How reliable are the UK’s imports?
E.g. What problems have there been when importing natural gas from Russia
E.g. How secure are the Straits of Hormuz - Oil & Gas
Affordability:
What has happened to the price of each fossil fuel in the last 10 years or so?
Can you find a graph for each fossil fuel?
What might be the impact of future price rises on the UK

Geography: a recession proof degree
It seems that a Geography degree is recession proof according to the Daily Telegraph along with subjects such as psychology, design and languages. The article cites the variety of skills Geography helps to develop as being of importance. 'Perhaps the wide range of skills offered by the subject has enabled graduates to prosper, with unemployment among recent students rising from 6.9 to just 10.2 per cent' For the full article in the Daily Telegraph click here.
